Fishing

Fishing in the Patapsco Valley Heritage Area offers anglers the opportunity to cast their lines in scenic river settings, quiet streams, and well-stocked waters. The Patapsco River is a popular destination for both casual and experienced fishers. Popular fishing spots include the Daniels, Avalon and Hollofield Areas of the Patapsco Valley State Park.

A Maryland fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Licenses can be obtained online through Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Northern Snakehead (Chesapeake Channa) Fishing

The northern snakehead, an invasive species, has been found in many of Maryland’s waterways, including the Patapsco River. These aggressive predators threaten native fish populations and Maryland DNR encourages anglers to catch and remove them.

Trout Stocking

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) stocks trout in the Patapsco River annually, making it a great location for trout fishing, especially in spring and fall. Trout, including rainbow trout and brown trout, are released in sections of Patapsco Valley State Park, including the Avalon, Orange Grove and Daniels areas.
