Swimming
Swimming can be a refreshing sport and in the Patapsco River, it can be particularly enthralling. In Patapsco Valley State Park, swimming is allowed along the river, unless posted otherwise. However, there are no lifeguards on duty, so swimmers should exercise caution. A non-river option is the Roger Carter Community Center in Ellicott City which features a public pool.
Water Depth: Be aware of the water depth and any unexpected drop-offs. Watch for any rises in the water level while swimming.
Water Quality: The river's water quality can fluctuate frequently due to environmental factors such as stormwater runoff. Look for signs of poor water quality, such as cloudy or discolored water and a foul smell.
Strong Currents: The river can have strong currents, especially after heavy rainfall. Be cautious of fast-flowing water before entering the water and of changes in the river while swimming.
Submerged Objects: Keep an eye out for submerged objects such as logs, rocks and debris that could cause injury or trap your feet and sharp stones along the bottom of the river.
Weather Conditions: Check the weather forecast before swimming in the river. Be mindful that weather upstream can affect conditions further down the river.
